DOWTHERM™  Pharmaceutical Processing

DOWTHERM™, DOWFROST™ and SYLTHERM^†1 Heat Transfer Fluids are used for batch processing of pharmaceutical products in multi-purpose reactors. Heat transfer fluids with broad operating temperature ranges are required so that chemical reactions can take place at high temperatures and crystallization of the final products can occur at very low temperatures. Several Dow fluids are favored by the pharmaceutical industry. 

SYLTHERM XLT Silicone Fluid is the leading product used in pharmaceutical batch processing. The fluid operates from -100ºC (-150ºF) up to 260ºC (500ºF), has essentially no odor, is very low in acute oral toxicity, and is not listed as reportable in the U.S. under SARA Title III, Section 313. 

DOWTHERM™ J Synthetic Organic Fluid offers higher temperature performance. The fluid can be used in liquid phase as low as -80ºC (-110°F) and up to 315°C (600°F). It is the fluid of choice for the most demanding single fluid heating and cooling applications.

Other Dow fluids are also useful for pharmaceutical batch processing. DOWTHERM 4000 and DOWCAL ™ 10 Inhibited Ethylene Glycol-based Fluids offer low temperature pumpability down to -28.9ºC (-20ºF) and high temperature operation up to 175ºC (350ºF); DOWFROST™ HD and DOWCAL™ 20 Inhibited Propylene Glycol-based Fluids offer the advantage of lower toxicity with recommended operating ranges from -45ºC (-50ºF) to 160ºC (325ºF). 

For applications where regulatory compliance is a concern, DOWCAL™ N and DOWFROST™ Inhibited Propylene Glycol-based Fluids have recommended operating ranges of -45ºC (-50ºF) to 120ºC (250ºF). The ingredients in DOWFROST™ and DOWCAL™ N Fluids are considered safe by the U.S. FDA food additive regulations for use in applications where incidental contact with food, potable water or other products for human consumption is possible.
